Montréal has a robust food scene with plenty of must-try dishes. Which should you prioritize during your visit?
Poutine
Probably Montréal’s most well-known dish, poutine leaves little to be desired. French fries, cheese curds, gravy — what more do you need? You’ll find many different variations on the dish throughout Montréal, too, from dessert poutine to breakfast poutine. After you’ve tried the original, switch things up with one of these inventive options.
Bagels
When you think destinations known for bagels, New York City might steal most of the limelight, but don’t overlook Montréal’s bagels. So, what’s the difference? Montréal’s bagels are typically smaller than New York City’s bagels, and they typically lean more sweet than savory. Give them a try and compare for yourself!
Beaver Tails
It’s kind of a gimmicky treat sold around the tourist hot spots, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious. A long, flat, fried pastry somewhat like a doughnut, somewhat like a funnel cake, beaver tails come topped with all sorts of sweets, from apples to chocolate to candy.
Smoked Meat Sandwiches
Brisket is brined, smoked and steamed, then piled onto rye bread to create Montréal’s smoked meat sandwiches. Add a little mustard or maybe a pickle, and you have a complete lunch — no frills, but perfect nonetheless.
