Take a weekend trip to Montpellier and you will find a great place to explore. Here’s how to see the main sights in 48 hours.
First of all, take a walk around the old town. Place de la Comédie is the centerpiece, with the opera house at one end and a shopping mall at the other. Stroll through the narrow alleyways of the old town and head up to the Arc de Triomphe before taking a look at the Chateau d’Eau and the aqueduct beyond.
Go for lunch at Le Petit Bistro in the old town and then have a wander around Musée Fabre, which houses an impressive art collection. Take a look into the Cathédrale St-Pierre and grab an ice cream at one of the pavement cafes as the sun goes down, have a bite to eat and then explore some of the fun student bars, such as Bar Al Andalus, Soundstation and The Temple Bar.
The next day take a short tram ride to the beach or cycle it if you are feeling active. Relax on the shores of the Mediterranean and then head back into Montpellier to visit the Jardins des Plantes, the oldest botanical garden in France.
