Tips / Destination

Montpellier is a fascinating city home to a large population of students, as well as a buzzing social scene. There are also lots of sights to see.

Top of the list is Place de la Comédie, the central plaza that boasts the opera house at one end and a shopping mall at the other, with a green esplanade leading off one side. It’s a nice place for people watching and the tourist office is also found here.

Cathedrale Saint Pierre is a Gothic marvel that sits right in the middle of the old town. Make sure you take a look at the stained-glass windows.

Next up is Promenade du Peyrou, which has the Arc de Triomphe on one side and the Chateau d’Eau on the other. Look out beyond the Chateau d’Eau and you’ll see one of the finest aqueducts in the cit,y too.

If you want to spend some time inside, Musée Fabre is a great place to do so. It’s the most important museum in the city and houses an impressive collection of art. Try to plan a visit on the first Sunday of the month when it’s free to get in.
