Tips / Destination

Head to Nimes for a weekend and you’ll discover a great small city that boasts some fascinating history. Here’s how to see the main sights in 48 hours.

First off, visit the Tour de Magne, the ancient fortifications that look down over the city from the Jardins de la Fontaine. You can climb to the top for great views over the city, and then wander back into town through the park.

Next up, check out the Roman temple called the Maison Carrée and walk through the old town to the Roman arena. It’s well worth taking a look around to learn about the history, and there are loads of good exhibitions as well as an audio guide. After lunch, take a look around the Fine Art Museum or learn more about the Roman history of the city at the Musée de la Romanité.

The next day go to Les Halles to see how the locals shop for fresh produce, and stock up on some souvenirs. Take a look around the St-Baudile church and then head out to the Musée Perrier some 13 kilometers outside town, where you can see where the famous fizzy water comes from.
