A popular way to get around the city and see different neighborhoods, Mi Teleférico is an aerial cable car connecting the La Paz-El Alto metro area. First opened in 2014, the system operates across 26 stations and 10 lines, and is the longest and highest urban cable car system in the world. The Basilica of San Francisco is a Catholic church constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries in the Andean Baroque style. A daytrip from La Paz is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Tiwanaku, a Pre-Columbian archaeological site founded around the first century A.D. It’s one of the largest archaeological sites in South America and features fascinating gates with intricate carvings, such as the Gate of the Sun. Yes, there is a museum dedicated solely to the coca plant, native to the Andean region. The museum covers the history of the coca leaf. Although the plant is mainly used to create cocaine, it also plays a significant role in religious ceremonies, as well as has healing properties.
