Cape Spartel is the northernmost point on the African continent and home to a promontory and lighthouse. Grand Socco is a bustling square separating the newer parts of the city from the old medina. Cafés, restaurants, a mosque, shops and outdoor benches surround the square. Once a palace, Kasbah Palace is now a museum, inviting visitors to explore the 18th-century property, once the residence of the city’s governor and, when coming to the city, for the Sultan of Morocco. Tangier’s history could perhaps be no better shown than at the Phoenician Tombs. Overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, this necropolis holds about 100 tombs, with more than half carved into the rock, dating from 1,400 B.C.E. Other artifacts from the time period were also found, now on display at Kasbah Museum.
