How to Save Money in Hawaii

Hawaii’s alluring islands are a notoriously expensive vacation destination. But with careful planning — and a few key sacrifices — Hawaii can become a budget-friendly vacation choice.

1.Don’t book accommodations at major hotel chains. Hawaii is home to some pretty stunning resorts, but they’ll set you back. Instead, book rooms through sites like Airbnb and CouchSurfing. You may not have the plushest accommodations, but you’ll save big — and you’ll meet locals, have access to neighborhoods and avoid a totally whitewashed, pre-packaged experience.Y ou can also save money by booking at bed and breakfasts or hostels with shared bathrooms, or by reserving a tent spot at a campground.

2. Eat at home. If you book accommodations with a kitchen — or at least kitchen access — you can save money by shopping at local groceries and eating at home. If you’re tempted to go out to eat, ask a local where they dine; they can point you to more budget-friendly spots away from the typical tourist haunts. Food trucks, dives and out-of-the way restaurants are cheaper and authentic.

3. Forgo pricey tours and make your own entertainment. Hike mountain trails, visit the volcanoes on your own and ask about hidden snorkel spots right off the beach. If you’re tempted to book a tour for an experience you can’t get on your own — like SCUBA diving or a sunset sailing cruise — do so through the company directly. Booking through a third party, such as at a booth outside a grocery store, will often cost double the base price.

Where Can You Find the Mai Tai Mile?

Stay at Kona Village on the Big Island of Hawai’i and you may think your experience consists solely of private, residential-style luxury and perhaps the occasional fresh pineapple, but Rosewood Resort has something else a little special. More specifically, Kona Village has its very own Mai Tai Mile, where guests can find four unique and different takes on the Mai Tai. Each distinct drink is inspired by its setting and comes with its own story.
