Europe

If you’re lucky enough to be in the Swiss city of Geneva for breakfast on a Sunday, spring for Sunday brunch at Café du Centre, a lovely vintage café founded in the 1930s in a section of the city that dates back to the 1300s. The brunch menu includes some lovely a la carte options and bakery items for those on a budget, but also your traditional brunch items (like eggs benedict with fresh seafood) for around €15.

Climb to the top of St. Peter’s Cathedral for a view of Geneva’s Old Town for less than €5. For a few euros more, you can also visit the nearby accompanying archaeological site, where you’ll see remains of the previous 4th-century church and tombs from the area’s original Celtic tribes.

Grab lunch at Café du Soleil where it’s said you can find the best fondue in all of Switzerland. For a little more than €20, you can indulge in a Gruyere fondue made using cheese imported from the village after which it was named, then refined for up to eight months.

For around €14, visit the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, a celebration of the history of the Geneva-founded humanitarian organization. The museum is divided into three separate exhibition areas — Defending Human Dignity, Restoring Family Links and Reducing Natural Risks — and is an interactive experience.

Tour the Palais des Nations, currently the European headquarters of the United Nations and at one time the headquarters of the League of Nations, for little more than €9. The knowledgeable guides will not only walk you through the history of the organizations and building, but will also make sure you’re up to date on all of the current United Nations dealings as well.
