Of Washington State’s Puget Sound islands, Whidbey Island is one of the most accessible. It also happens to be the longest, stretching nearly 60 miles down the gullet of the sound. Whidbey combines small town charm with bucolic farms, historic forts and excellent scenery for an exciting daytrip.
Starting from the northern end, drive onto the island and enter Deception Pass State Park, filled with easy trails through forested headlands and beaches. Take a heart-thumping walk across Deception Pass Bridge, which soars over the narrow channel.

Or hike the historic farmlands at Fort Ebey State Park and Ebey’s Landing, where rolling green hills and coastline transport you to Ireland. Stop at the Lavender Wind Farm if you enjoy this beautifully scented herb.
In nearby Coupeville, the small town feels like New England with its storefronts and seafood chowders. Taste the local Penn Cove mussels, pulled right out of the water in front of the town.
Another great option on your daytrip is to take a whale-watching trip. You may spot a resident orca pod or see gray whales as you enjoy a few hours on the water.
