In recent years, music festivals have become a huge global trend. Spain is a great place to check out many different kinds of music with the best events taking place in the summer.
Among the most popular festivals with foreign visitors is the Festival Internacional de Benicassim, otherwise known as FIB. Each July, tens of thousands of music lovers descend on the small beachside town to listen to big-ticket artists such as Oasis and Kings of Leon.
Further up the Mediterranean coast in Barcelona, Sonar Festival caters to electronic music lovers. In mid-June, multiple venues around the city host parties showcasing the best of house and techno to a trendy crowd.
Over on the Atlantic coast, the Basque country plays host to the Azkena Rock Festival. The event is known for its diverse bookings and laidback atmosphere. Azkena takes place in Vitoria-Gasteiz each June.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is also home to a jazz festival which has taken place over the course of an entire week since 1995. Expect to see top jazz talent from across Europe and the world in July.
If you are more into reggae, head to the town of Benicassim in August for the Rototom Sunsplash festival. The vibe is definitely more laid back than at FIB, with an emphasis on reggae and roots instead of rock.
