Top 5 / Europe

German food is “ausgezeichnet,” “toll” and “lecker!”, as the Germans might say. Of course they would recommend their own food, but they have reason to, as according to their German translation, it’s amazing, awesome and tasty!

If you’ve got a Germany trip planned, make sure you get at least one of these dishes in your belly.

Currywurst

Currywurst is your starting point. Wurst means sausage, and curry … means curry. It’s usually a pork sausage, and the curry powder is generously sprinkled over the sausage accompanied by ketchup. It’s simple, but it’s tasty. Have it with fries or in a bread roll and you’re good to go.

Schnitzel

You can’t go to Germany without trying some schnitzel with a tasty, Bavarian beer. It’s a delicious, thin, deep-fried dish that’s usually made from veal, but if you prefer pork, turkey or chicken, you just need to ask. Normally, if you don’t specify, you’ll get veal.

Käsespätzle

This is a tasty, filling vegetarian dish you shouldn’t pass up if you get the chance. It’s cheese, soft egg noodles and then more cheese. Oh, and then more cheese. Sometimes it’s mixed with liver or even sauerkraut. Stop drooling.

Rouladen

This mouth-watering dish will make you want to apply for citizenship and never go home. The rouladen consists of thinly-sliced, tender beef, mustard, onions, smoked ham and pickles, all rolled up in a pastry and left to stew in a delicious sauce.

Kartoffelpuffer

If you’ve been to Germany before, you’ll know they love their potatoes. This strange-sounding dish is a great take on the classic potato. Kartoffelpuffer are made from ground or thinly-sliced potatoes mixed with flour, egg, onion and a touch of seasoning. Throw this in with some beef and red cabbage and you’ll soon be mistaken for a local.
