Under $100 / Europe

Spain’s southern coast (also known as the Costa del Sol) is a sublime getaway for travelers of all budgets. The Sierra Blanca Mountains meet the Mediterranean Sea in this seaside town of Marbella in southern Andalusia, and despite all the yachts and high-priced resorts, visitors can manage an affordable location among the extravagant surroundings.

The simplest and most obvious activity involves relaxing on the beach. Although some are accessible only through resorts, a smattering of fee-free playas exists along the coast including Bounty Beach and Playa de Alicate. Walkers will enjoy a stroll along the Paseo Maritimo where beach bars and sea views abound.

After a refreshing swim in the Mediterranean, saunter through Marbella´s Old Quarter where Moorish architecture still rises high above the town. Window shop and pop into old churches (such as the Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnacion) to get a feel for the regional history.

For an afternoon snack of traditional Spanish tapas, stop in at El Rincon de Fran where small plates like fried calamari and a cold cerveza range from $2 to $10.

After a meal, get in touch with nature with a visit to the peaceful Alameda Park where walking trails and private picnic spots allow visitors to shade themselves from the strong Spanish sun. True adventure seekers can arrange a hike around or up La Concha, Marbella’s highest peak with views that stretch all the way to Morocco.
