If you’ve ever fiddled with a paper trail map or struggled to use your smartphone’s existing map app to find a trailhead or follow a forest service road, there’s a great solution out there for you with a new app called ROAM by onXmaps. It turns your smartphone into the best GPS device out there.
The app allows users to layer a range of maps and features over a map of wherever they are, including public and private lands, national and state parks, U.S. trails and topographic information. There’s also satellite imagery, world imagery, city streets and a full range of customizable options. Even more impressive, the app tracks your movements so you’ll never get lost again, and also marks campsites, river and fishing access, beaches, hot springs and more.
The app is incredibly easy to use and straightforward — just a few minutes of going through the menu options and you’ll have it figured out. Your phone’s built-in GPS capabilities make this the best GPS device you already own.
ROAM maps can be saved on the phone’s memory for use while off the grid. The app is a great value at just $9.99, considering its range of capabilities.
