Having grown up in Wisconsin, you inherently knew your state was responsible for some of the most watery beers outside St. Louis allowable by law to still be called beer.

Old Milwaukee, Miller, Special Export, Hamm’s painted the horizon of a beer landscape littered with other piss providing culprits. All that said, no one drank Budweiser, that sacrilege was brewed out of state and full-stop taboo.

But times change and Wisconsin did as well. With strong university communities and the ingredients, the craft beer movement was never lost on this state; in fact, they do some of the best work and did it before many joined the movement.

Case in point must be New Glarus Brewing Company and its awarding-winning Spotted Cow, among it’s other offerings.

Spotted cow is fruity, fresh and will go down perfectly after a quick chill; Serendipity, on the other hand. gains an extra level of complexity by using oak to balance out the rich berry nose so best not to leave them outside if there is snow forecast.

Daniel and Deb Carey have made one of the quaintest little breweries in Wisconsin to national acclaim, but there is nothing shy or reserved about the beer, which is brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition.

New Glarus features many different styles and examples, from the small batch Thumbprint, which are sure to please even the most discerning of beer drinkers, to the year-round brews, there is something for everyone in this part of Wisconsin.
