Contaminated water is now safe to drink with LifeStraw, a water filter designed to filter water for drinking. LifeStraw filters a maximum of 1,000 liters of water — enough for one person for an entire year.

LifeStraw is redefining safe drinking water through technology, innovation, product quality and design. The process began in 1994, when the Carter Center approached Vestergaard, LifeStraw’s parent company, to develop a filter to remove Guinea worm larvae from contaminated water. Vestergaard developed a cloth filter that evolved to the more effective pip form five years later. More than 37 million LifeStraw Guinea worm filters contributed to the annihilation of the disease.

Vestergaard worked to create a product that would filter all contaminants from unsafe water and in 2005 came the birth of the straw-like filter LifeStraw. The straw was designed to help those in developing countries and in emergency settings following natural disasters.

LifeStraw technology was quickly adopted for in-home use and has become the LifeStraw Family water purifier, designed to purify larger quantities of water.

The LifeStraw portfolio has expanded over the years and now includes high-volume purifiers in schools and clinics. LifeStraw designed a refillable water bottle, LifeStraw Go, and a collapsible bag ideal for campsites and hikes, LifeStraw Mission. The products are used in more than 64 countries and inspire a positive impact.
