Traditionally, travel agents have been veritable event planners when it comes to vacations. They book flights, accommodations and sign up travelers for tours in popular destinations visited by millions of people. But now that most people can perform these tasks on their own with the help of the world wide web, travel agents are becoming obsolete. However, there is still a small subset of travel pioneers taking more adventurous travelers to places yet to make the top travel lists, places so off the beaten path TripAdvisor, Airbnb and other travel tip sites won’t be of use.
These Experience Makers are travel specialists that curated and arranged excursions to and within destinations most travelers haven’t even heard of and might not be able to access on their own. From treks across the Mongolian desert to police-escorted journeys along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to heli-skiing in Greenland, the opportunities are not for every style of traveler, but the exclusivity and originality are what make the experiences special.
Organizations that offer these types of travel include TCS World Travel, Wild Frontiers and EYOS Expeditions, the latter offers yacht charters to the Northwest Passage and Antarctica, among other destinations. As experiential travel begins to eclipse traditional methods and tours, these experience leaders are becoming the new travel agents.
