Destinations / Africa

Cape Town serves as the legislative capital of South Africa. Located near Cape of Good Hope, there is plenty to do in the city on a budget.

Start your day with a trip to Jarryds Espresso Bar and Eatery for breakfast. Like the name implies, this spot has great coffee. The menu is expansive and features everything from specialty fritters to omelets and more. Expect to eat here for less than $15.

Next, head to the V&A Waterfront, the oldest operating harbor in the southern hemisphere. If you really want to save money, you can explore the harbor on your own. Otherwise, get in on a tour. If you want to ride the Cape’s Ferris wheel, an admission ticket will cost about $10.

Next, grab lunch at Beluga. This versatile restaurant offers vegan and vegetarian options in a South African and Asian fusion style. Expect to get a full meal here for less than $20.

History buffs need to make sure to stop at Bo-Kaap. Once known as the Malay Quarter, this is the part of town set up as housing for the slaves brought in to work the Cape. Many of the slaves came from Malaysia and Indonesia, hence the name. The buildings are all brightly colored, and the history itself is worth exploring.

By now, you’re done a ton of walking. Get ready for a great dinner at The Pot Luck Club. You can grab a full meal for less than $20. This place also has a bar, so it is perfect for a quick drink and socializing before returning to the hotel room.
