Studies from Harvard and the National Institute of Health emphasize the importance of time outdoors to reduce stress, boost mood and lower anxiety. In addition to spending time in nature, recent research has shown how exposure to art not only sparks joy but also supports long-term cognitive health and lowers cortisol levels. Combine art with nature in one place at Ladew Gardens in Monkton, Maryland.
Considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the country, Ladew Gardens spans more than 22 acres and features formal gardens, historic topiary, rotating art installations and more. In other words, don’t come just expecting flowers; you’ll instead find a living museum where art and nature coexist.
Enter the gardens and immediately come across the iconic Hunt Scene, a display of founder Mr. Ladew’s favorite pastimes of fox hunting. The gardens also include meticulous “garden rooms” surrounding the estate, as well as a nature walk leading visitors through the unspoiled landscape sections of the property. The Pollinator Gardens Trail, meanwhile, highlights native plants and pollinators through a wildflower meadow.
In Butterfly House, marvel at native butterflies and moths. Even the historic Manor House on the grounds is worth a visit, built in 1749 and carefully preserved to showcase the house’s collection of antiques and treasures gathered from Ladew’s travels around the world. The house also boasts the Oval Library, with a secret door, more than 2,500 books and more.
Spend an entire day here without leaving for food, too, thanks to The Ladew Café, serving hand-made sandwiches, seasonal salads, desserts and more.
