In conjunction with Samsung Electronics, Qantas — Australia’s largest domestic and international airline — designed a new entertainment system intended to give the user a fully immersive, 360-degree virtual experience for flight travel.
To test the product, Qantas VR headsets will be made available to customers in Sydney and Melbourne first-class lounges, and first-class services on select Airbus A380 services. It is also reported to be available on flights between Australia and Los Angeles beginning in mid-March. Qantas aims to the only airline offering an in-flight virtual reality experience.
The technology will be used to introduce virtual tours of select Qantas services, as well as provide basic entertainment like movies and television. They also intend on developing live-action content of destination footage. For example, Tourism NT is the first group to partner with Qantas to create a 3D experience from Kadaku National Park.
