Venezuela’s Angel Falls is said to be the tallest uninterrupted waterfall on Earth. The enormous cascading falls begin at a height of 3,212 feet and fall for 2,648 feet before evaporating into a blinding mist before reaching the ground. It also served as the inspiration for the waterfall in the Disney film Up.
Reaching Angels Falls, or Kerepakupai Merú as it’s officially known, is no easy task. Its location in the center of an isolated jungle makes for an adventurous journey. Most travelers must first fly out of Ciudad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz to the base camp at Canaima. From there, it’s a beautiful but rough ride up the Carrao River. What starts out as a peaceful journey along a backdrop of tabletop mountains and jungle-clad mesas quickly turns into an uphill battle as you face churning rapids and attempt to ascend 650 feet. The Pemón guides who live in the region are well versed in getting tourists through, but it’s exhilarating and a bit dangerous all the same.
Once you make land, it’s another long trek up slippery boulders and crags before reaching the falls. One look at it and you’ll understand why it’s widely considered one of the top five waterfalls in the world.
