The beautiful Arctic is home to some of the most interesting animals in the world. Here are eight of our favorites.
Seal
Many seals live their whole lives on floating ice, hunting and raising young without ever going on land.
Arctic Fox
Climate change is unfortunately pushing the red fox north, giving the much smaller Arctic fox more competition and less space to hunt.
Snowy Owl
Snowy owls’ highly developed eyesight and hearing helps them find prey even in the barren Arctic.
Beluga Whale
Belugas are a federal-protected species, but today an entirely new predator hunts them — killer whales migrating north with shifting weather patterns.
Walrus
The tusks of a walrus can grow up to 1 meter in length, used to protect them from orcas and help maneuver around ice.
Polar Bear
Polar bears are an endangered species in America; in Canada, where two thirds live, they do not have protection.
Wolverine
Wolverines aren’t quite as scary as the X-Men superhero. They do have retractable claws, but they’re for digging and climbing.
Narwhal
It was believed narwhals got their tusks from unicorns, which unfortunately incentivized medieval traders to hunt them for their magical properties.
