Tips / Travel

If you’re overseas and decide you want to extend your trip to another country, don’t fret: You can still acquire a visa even though you’re far from home. Most countries have embassies scattered throughout the world that can help you out.

Find the Nearest City

Most embassies are located in capital cities, or at least large cities, so you’ll have to head to one in order to apply for a visa. Don’t expect to find an embassy in the middle of nowhere India and you likely can’t apply online.

Give It Time

Applying for a visa takes at least 24 hours in most places, sometimes up to one or two weeks. Be prepared to park yourself in town for a few days while your visa is processing.

Book Early

Two things you need to keep in mind when applying for a visa is many countries will require proof of travel both in and out of the country before approving you for one. Have your flight information on hand when you head to the embassy to apply.

Take Photos

Some countries also require you to provide photos when applying for a visa, much like the kind you needed when you got your passport. It’s helpful to have extras on hand while you travel, but most cities have places you can go to get them done.

Relinquish Your Passport

One of the most uncomfortable parts of applying for a visa overseas is you’ll have to relinquish your passport in many, if not all, places. The problem is wandering around a foreign country without your passport is often illegal. Check with the embassy to see what you must do to stay legal and stay while they’re in possession of your visa application and passport before you find yourself locked up.
