Tips / Travel

Riding on public transportation is a great way to save money and cut back on highway commuting stress. However, public transportation can come with its own set of stressors — track work, schedule changes, annoying passengers, etc. Follow our tips to avoid stress and become a public transportation pro.

  • Download apps like Transit App or Moovit for alerts and updates. Many city’s public transportation systems now have apps, like the MTA in New York City, so be sure to check your local system.
  • Learn the schedules. Running to catch a train or bus is not a great way to start your commute. Make sure you arrive a few minutes early so you’re ready and waiting when your ride arrives.
  • Pay attention to the stops. If it’s your first time on the system, do a bit of research ahead of time to learn the stops and whether or not you need to make any transfers to get to your destination.
  • Make sure you have enough cash and accessible credit cards to pay for your trip. Ticketing systems can be finicky and sometimes won’t accept bills or cards, so be prepared. It doesn’t hurt to have some change, too.
  • Play the part. Looking like you know what you’re doing is half the battle. Be alert and assertive.
  • Bring hand sanitizer in case you run into any unclean situations.
