Chicago is one of the most iconic food cities in the United States. From deep-dish pizza to Chicago-style hot dogs and everything in between, Chicagoans take their food seriously. If you’re on a budget but still want to experience all of the best the city has to offer, have no fear. Check out these spots for cheap eats in the Windy City.
If pizza is your top priority, check out Pequod’s Pizza. Pan pizza and thin crust options are available. Visit during lunch Monday–Friday to take advantage of the lunch special: $4.95 for a seven-inch pan pizza with a fountain beverage.
Often considered the best hot dog in the United States, Gene and Jude’s is a Chicago institution. Opened in 1946, the carry-out spot serves up classic Chicago-style hot dogs and hand-cut French fries for less than $10.
Chicago is home to several predominantly Polish neighborhoods and offers the cuisine to reflect this connection. Stop by Pierogi Heaven for a plate of the popular Polish dumplings. Multiple sweet and savory varieties are available. An order of nine costs less than $9.
For a sweet note, grab a donut at Glazed and Infused. Try a classic flavor (glazed) or something more adventurous (blackberry cheesecake) for $2–3.
If sweet and savory is your thing, order a Chicago mix at Garrett’s Popcorn. This popular mix combines caramel popcorn and cheese popcorn. Spend about $5 for a small bag.
