Tips / Destination

Romania is home to some of the best, untouched landscape in Europe. The beautiful mountains and scenic valleys make for some truly stunning views. That might be why the country is becoming increasingly popular with travelers who love to hike. Here are some of the best treks available.

Busteni – Urlatoarea Waterfall

The Bucegi Mountains provide overlooks of the picturesque Prahova Valley along with one of the country’s most incredible waterfalls, Urlatoarea. The route begins in Busteni and winds through the mountain passes for roughly an hour, but you’ll likely spend so much time stopping to take in the sights your trip will last half the day.

Piatra Craiului Mountains

The Piatra Craiului Mountains offer dozens of epic hiking trails and any of them that pass through the Zărnestilor Keys are worth the trip. The Keys are a gorgeous two-kilometer passage carved in rock that ascends 200 meters high. You’ll also pass the local sheepholds as well as the villages of Măgura and Pestera where the locals are always happy to have visitors.

Retezat Mountains

The Retezat Mountains, home to Retezat National Park, is a biosphere that contains more than 55 species of animals and more than 80 glacial lakes to enjoy. The trail starting at Bucara Lake takes you along seven of these and provides some wonderful views of nature. It’s the best region to visit during the winter and spring.

Făgăraş Mountains

The Făgăraş Mountains are in the center of the country and easily accessible for hikers. One of the best trails for seasoned hikers runs from Bâlea Waterfall to Bâlea Lake and lasts five hours. Beginners are better off making the trek from Capra Cabin to Capra Lake, a three-hour jaunt that runs right back the famous Capra Waterfall.
