Tips / Destination

Between the Mayan ruins, stunning seaside resorts and bustling cities, Mexico made a name for itself among travelers who long for adventure. But the beautiful country is also a relaxing oasis if you want it to be. Check out these incredible spas scattered throughout the region.

Yäan Wellness Spa in Tulum is arguably one of the best spas in the country, possibly even the world. The beautiful center combines a rustic and modern appeal with the luxurious treatments one would expect at a spa. But it also tosses in wonderful Mayan rituals, including a monthly sweat lodge experience.

One&Only Palmilla is regularly touted as the most popular spa in Cabo. As you can imagine, the spa caters to a wealthy clientele, with expansive facilities offering facials, massages, hot and cold plunge pools, aromatherapy steam rooms and private gardens.

The on-site spa at Hotel Matilda in San Miguel was named the Best Wellness Experience in Mexico by Travel + Leisure. Matilda boasts an impressive variety of yoga classes, a Hammam ritual, aromatherapy massages, aphrodisiac baths and the Ritual Xänte, a body treatment for sensitive skin. It also features its own apothecary where you can purchase many of the hand-blended beauty products they use.

The Willow Stream Spa in Playa del Carmen rests amid a stunning tropical landscape and offers some truly unique experiences. The spa boasts indigenous treatments and ancient rituals alongside modern techniques. They also have a beehive, used to create honey-based treatments for guests.

The Gem Spa at Grand Fiesta Americana in Cancun is for the traveler who is a fan of hydrotherapy. Aside from being right next to the beach, the spa boasts a 10-stop hydrotherapy treatment that includes hot and cold plunges, rain showers and steam rooms. It also features separate men and women lounges, and couples’ services.

Taking It Back to Basics at Ghent’s Gruut Brewery

Breweries are everywhere today and, while many craft and microbreweries specialize in particular styles of beer, few are quite as specialized as Ghent Gruut Brewery in Ghent, Belgium. Here, the current craze for hop-heavy India Pale Ales is entirely eschewed as absolutely no hops at all are used in the brewing process. Before you clamor to claim this can’t be beer at all as everyone knows the four ingredients of beer are grain, water, yeast, and hops, consider hops weren’t actually added to beer until the 13th century. Before then, all beers were flavored with herbs and spices, or gruut, as the French population of medieval Ghent called them.
