There has always been a fascination with visiting places that hold a special place in our imagination and these usually come from books or movies. If you are a big fan of the latter, you may have already visited some of your favorite movie landmarks. Those from our childhood hold a particular appeal, like the firehouse from Ghostbusters or the set of Lord of the Rings, to which people conduct real pilgrimages to visit the shire. If New Zealand is a little too far afield for you, you might want to check out these museums and sites found in some of your favorite nostalgia movies:
The house from A Christmas Story: Ralphie’s house is real and you can walk the halls and see the leg lamp for yourself in Cleveland, Ohio.
The actual field from Field of Dreams with its farmhouse is sitting on a beautiful stretch of road in Iowa and is usually pretty quite and empty of tourists. You can even rent the house, if you want.
Alternatively, you might want to visit the inspiration for your favorite movies like the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., which inspired the Overlook in Steven King’s novel, The Shining. Martha’s Vineyard, inspired the set of Jaws.
No matter what your favorite movie is, there is probably a stop you can make to pay it tribute and see how it compares.
