The Bosnian capital has a fascinating history and plenty of museums to tell its stories. Here are some of the best.
Over the course of 1,422 days 1992–1995, the city was under siege by the Serbians. Snipers ensured no one could leave without risking their life, but an 800-meter-long tunnel offered some hope. Today, the Tunnel Museum lets visitors see how refugees escaped the worst siege in modern history.
The 1990s Balkan conflict also saw the Srebrenica massacre, in which Serbian troops murdered and raped the inhabitants of an Eastern Bosnian town. The victims are now commemorated at Galerija 11/07/95, which aims to preserve the historic memory of the event.
That siege was just one part of a violent history that saw Bosnia occupied for nearly 600 years. Head to the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina to learn more about the twists and turns of the country’s existence.
Those interested in the Ottoman Empire and its influence on Bosnia will enjoy a visit to Svrzo’s House. It remains decorated in the style fashionable among wealthy Ottomans and boasts elaborate carvings.
Another good choice is the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with exhibits from throughout the ages. It houses the Sarajevo Haggadah from 1350, the oldest Jewish document on the planet.
