Maputo doesn’t have a wealth of museums to choose from, but what the city does offer is pretty unique. There are a few great options for those interested in the local culture of both the town and the country of Mozambique.
The Natural History Museum in Maputo is mostly well known for its displays of embalmed animals in natural habitats and pieces of African art on the walls. However, the real draw of the museum is the collection of elephant fetuses. More than a dozen of them display the lifecycle of a preborn elephant from conception up to 22 months of gestation.
CFM is a wonderful exhibit located in the Central Railway Station of Maputo that displays exhibits highlighting the advent of trains and railways systems in the region. It offers engaging exhibits on the history of the rail system in the country and how many parts of the trains work.
The National Money Museum sits in what was once the first masonry building in Maputo, but now it’s used to showcase the various currencies from around the world as well as in Mozambique. It has wonderful exhibits highlighting the history of trade in the region as well as an impressive display of the coins used in Maputo throughout history.
The National Art Museum, while small, displays an impressive collection of work from Mozambique artists ranging from pre-independence to contemporary paintings and sculptures. The massive wood carvings are probably the biggest draw, and there are even carvers inside the museum who will make you something for a small fee.
