With culinary influences from Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Balkan civilizations, Sarajevo is a great place to eat. Here are some of the best restaurants in town.
Eat like a local at Avlija, found slightly outside the tourist-heavy center of town. The menu offers traditional Bosnian dishes as well as international flavors, and it’s great for people watching.
Head to Dveri to get a taste of traditional countryside cooking. It’s decorated like a country house even though it’s in the middle of the city, and chefs cook up traditional dishes with a modern twist. Plus, it won’t break the bank.
Karuzo is a great option for vegetarians in an otherwise meat-heavy city. It’s completely meat-free and smoking inside is banned, a rarity for Bosnia. The food is healthy and tasty, and it’s become so popular booking ahead is essential.
On a hill outside the city lies Kibe Mahala, a Bosnian restaurant that serves up amazing views alongside great food. The house special is spit-roast lamb, and there are wines on offer from throughout the region.
If you want to try Asian-Balkan fusion, Mala Kuhinja is the place to go. It’s one of the best dining experiences in Sarajevo, and there is no menu. Instead, waiters suggest dishes based on a conversation with each diner.
