Cuba is a fascinating country with a relatively undeveloped tourist infrastructure. Here are the best ways to get around the Caribbean island.
While Cubans are allowed to travel on Astro intercity buses, tourists are restricted to the more expensive Viazul buses. While the network reaches the furthest points of the island, departures are scarce and often fully booked even in low season.
As a result, those traveling in groups might be better off traveling in a shared taxi. Official government taxis known as Cubacar are more expensive than the individual taxis, which run without meters. If you are good at negotiating you can often get between cities in a group for the same price as bus tickets.
If there are no taxis or you fancy a bit of adventure, hail down one of the camiones. These converted trucks may look like they are meant for animals, but inside there are seats and sometimes even TVs. Traffic is light in Cuba so just stand on the main road out of town and stick your thumb out. Camiones are generally cheaper than buses but be sure to agree a price before you board.
In large cities, there are often bicycle- or horse-drawn taxis that will get you from A to B. This can be a great way to beat the heat of the day if you can split the cost with your travel buddies.
