Black History Month Celebrations in Cleveland

Cleveland offers locals and visitors plenty of opportunities to celebrate Black History Month. The city hosts numerous virtual and in-person events, exhibits and attractions highlighting Black culture in Cleveland.

 

Karamu House, the United States’ oldest Black-producing theater, offers a variety of programming for Black History Month. Watch virtual live events each Friday. View a free, on-demand documentary about the jazz musical Shuffle Along. The theater celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021. Streaming Feb. 22–28,  watch the on-demand, one-man show Rhapsody in Black. Performed by LeLand Gantt about his experience with racism in America, watch a live Q&A with Gantt, hosted by Playhouse Square Feb. 28. Learn more about the history of Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood with the virtual exhibit “The Rise of Black Glenville.” The exhibit delves into the neighborhood’s significance to the Civil Rights Movement.

 

Check out local murals and art installations throughout the city. More than 20 artists contributed to the “Black Lives Matter Street Mural” on East 93rd Street, with each artist taking a letter to honor Black culture in Cleveland. Originally displayed at Public Square, the “Protest” art installation is now housed at Cleveland Public Library Langston Hughes Branch. Created by Nigerian-born artist Olalekan ‘Lek’ Jeyifous, the work depicts individuals engaged in various forms of protest.
