Bad for the arteries but good for the soul — that seems to be the motto of the thousands of pier-side food stands, soda fountains and eateries of the Jersey Shore. If it is fried, greasy and edible, it can be found along the 127 miles of beach stretching from Sandy Hook down to Cape May. Ahead are many of the culinary experiences you can find in this area.
Funnel Cake
For those not worried about counting calories, there is the deep fried, powdered, golden treat known as funnel cake. We recommend Charlie’s Funnel Cake located at the famous Steel Pier of Atlantic City, where one can enjoy deep-fried Oreos if feeling adventurous.
Cheesesteaks
Although typically considered a delicacy of Philadelphia, cheesesteak eateries can be found in droves all along the coast of New Jersey. Perhaps none is more famous than Russo’s Market, situated about five minutes from the bright and colorful beachside amusement park piers of Wildwood.
Hoagies
For the Bruce Springsteen disciple looking to chow down before the show starts in Asbury Park, Hoagitos is the place to go. Here, one can enjoy their famous miniature hoagies.
Pizza
As with any area of the country, the people of the Jersey Shore have attempted to prove their mettle and offer their take on the pizza game. One of the best destinations is Manco and Manco’s in Ocean City. Although the owners are currently in trouble for tax evasion, the spiraling tomato sauce atop their pies will keep the little jurors in your stomach happy.
Saltwater Taffy
Invented more than 130 years ago, saltwater taffy is one of New Jersey’s great specialties. Although aficionados will debate the best, many consider Shriver’s Saltwater Taffy in Ocean City to reign supreme.
