Walking into Cafe Fixe in Brookline, Mass., is like being transported to another world, a world made entirely of smooth jazz, perfect espresso, almond croissants and window-side seats illuminated by the light through floor-to-ceiling windows.
I’m normally not one for a place to utterly highbrow. I mean, they sell hard-boiled eggs and fig bars, and none of the patrons ever talk. Ever. But as a nearby resident who commuted into Boston by hopping on the very nearby train stop (Washington Square on the C-Green Line), I’d often pop in for a coffee to go, and be entranced by the environment.
The first time I walked in I was weirded out, to tell you the truth. The space is small, with only a few tables, but it’s bright and well lit, accented by natural wood counter tops and white walls. However, the more I visited, the more I fell in love with the simplicity, and became instantly comfortable. I found myself going there to get work done, sitting by the window and sipping a latte, listening to the jazzy cafe tunes. The only person who talked was the barista, and it was usually just to take an order. The whole place was like an unofficial quiet zone.
If you find yourself in the Boston area for an extended period of time, and need a little escape without going too far, find a seat at Cafe Fixe. You’ll leave feeling utterly refreshed and ready to take on the bustle of the city center.
