Camping in a Bubble

Looking like something out of a sci-fi film, inflatable bubble tents are the latest trend in alternative ways of camping. You might have seen them in those Sky Mall magazines or part of a VIP package for camping festivals, but these futuristic living quarters are becoming available more online.

They’re designed exactly how they sound. A plastic sphere is inflated to its maximum capacity, usually by a small blower that also maintains cabin pressure. There’s usually an alcove with a door and some companies are even manufacturing multi-room bubbles that can rival the comfort of a cabin. The blower doesn’t require more energy that your average household appliance and it replaces the total volume of air up to seven times an hour. You can also turn it off and make the cabin air tight, though not for long as it’s possible to suffocate inside.

These bubbles are made with 1000d-grade vinyl coated with nylon and UV treatment, making it rip proof, waterproof and flame retardant. If you’ve seen them at Burning Man, you know the tents can be decked out in complete luxury, yet are still simple to clean and pack away. If you don’t want a completely transparent bubble, there are models covered save for a few windows and a skylight to see the stars.
