Tips / Travel

The road trip is an American tradition and one every traveler should partake in at least once in a lifetime. There is so much to see and explore right here at home it’d be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to put your foot on the gas and go. Just remember to take good care of your car if you do.

Clean the Battery

The battery seems to be the first thing to go in a car, so make sure yours is up to snuff. Check the charge at your local auto parts store and give it a good clean. Mix together some baking soda and water to help clear it of any abrasive materials.

Monitor Your Tires

Your tires are susceptible to wear and tear before and during your trip. Keep a close eye on them, make sure to maintain the proper amount of air to save money on gas, look for any cuts or bulges and check the tread before leaving. Place a quarter upside down in the tread, and if you can see the top of Washington’s head you’ve got a problem.

Top Off the Fluids

Always ensure your fluids are topped off before a road trip and check them each time you stop for the night. Brake and transmission fluid are vital to your car’s health, as are power steering and antifreeze. If you’re low on any of these it could spell disaster.

Change Your Brakes

If you haven’t changed the brakes lately it’s important to do so before you head out. They’re essential to ensuring a safe trip for you and others on the road with you. If they feel soft, take them in and have them replaced or learn how to do it yourself. Inspect them regularly during your adventure.
