Carnival celebrations take place throughout the Christian world, but the Italian city of Venice is one of the most famous places to take in the event.
While some people head to Rio de Janeiro or Salvador de Bahia for Carnival, others prefer to go to northeast Italy. The weather might not be as warm, but the elaborate masks and festival atmosphere more than make up for it.
In 2017, Venice Carnival will run Feb. 11–28, with a catalogue of events such as grand balls and street parties. The tradition is to wear elaborate costumes, with masks a particular focus.
If you are planning to attend, invest in a mask. The sight of thousands of revelers cavorting around the historic city is surreal, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun.
The best time to visit is the last week, and the last weekend is particularly raucous. For budget travelers there are plenty of free events going on, while those with cash to burn are likely to attend a private party. One of the biggest names on the calendar is the Valentine’s Grand Masquerade Ball, on Feb. 6. Tickets start at around $795.
Unless you want to really splurge, you’re better off getting a mask and sticking to the free events. St Mark’s Square acts as the center of Carnival celebrations, and you’ll find yourself swept away in the revelry.
Venice is easily reached from major European hubs. Be aware hotel rates spike during Carnival and accommodations might not be easy to find, so arrange accordingly.
