This year’s theme is Assembly Required, kicking off with a competition to build a better mousetrap. Other workshops include:

  • “Physical and Virtual Chain Reactions”
    • Participants use ramps, dominoes and ping-pong balls to create physical chain reactions, in addition to learning block computer programming to develop a virtual counterpart.
  • “Illuminated Stories with Paper Circuits”
    • Students are introduced to basic electrical engineering concepts to light up their paper illustrations in three-dimensional dioramas.
  • “Second Time Around: Building with Recycled Materials”
    • This is a day-long workshop where students learn about the environmental impact of recycling, as well as the various uses of recycled materials in architecture and design.
  • “Make to Move”
    • Participants take a visit to the MIT LIST Visual Arts Center, drawing inspiration from Arthur Ganson’s kinetic sculptures to create their own moving artwork.

The workshops are limited to middle-school students, but people of all ages can attend showcases like “Medical Making,” an exploration of biology and microfluidics in medicine. “FEB Fest” is the culminating event, showcasing projects from the top engineers, builders and creators in the area. Visitors can also take guided tours of MIT’s many interesting buildings, from the Parson School of Design to the Harvard Microrobotics Lab.
