National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place Sept. 15–Oct. 15 annually. Take this opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Americans who have richly influenced our nation.
The observation began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to a full month in 1988. Sept. 15 holds special significance as this date marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Communities around the country commemorate the month. Here are some tips for celebrating in your town:
- Browse audio and video presentations highlighting historical and cultural achievements.
- Learn more about the Hispanic people through the National Park Service. Read about the impact of the Civil War on Hispanics or plan an itinerary for visiting important historic sites.
- If you happen to be in the area, Fayetteville, Ark., hosts the annual Northwest Arkansas Hispanic Heritage Festival during Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s event takes place Oct. 1–2.
- Hola Charlotte is another local festival celebrating Hispanic culture in Charlotte. The festival will be held Oct. 1.
- Explore exhibits at organizations like the Library of Congress and the National Gallery of Art celebrating Hispanic American art and history.
- For a full list of exhibits, events and collections, consult the official Hispanic Heritage Month website.
