Celebrity Cruises announced a two-year partnership with Malala Fund, an organization whose mission is to provide every girl with 12 years of safe, quality education.
Inspired by Malala’s mission, Celebrity Cruises announced Nobel Laureate and U.N. Messenger of Peace Malala Yousafzai as the Godmother of its newest ship, Celebrity Edge, debuting late in 2018.
Announcing the partnership, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO, Celebrity Cruises, said, “Malala’s dedication to girls’ education sets an example worth following. Partnering with the Malala Fund was a natural fit as we share the same passion and commitment to an incredible cause. We believe in opportunities for all, especially as our crew on-board represent more than 50 different cultures and amazing stories of achievement, education and economic advancement.”
A centuries-old maritime tradition, the role of Godmother is a lifetime title and honor. During the launch of a new ship, the Godmother is responsible for bestowing good luck over the vessel by breaking a bottle over the bow as the ship is named.
The cruise line will continue to reveal details regarding its exciting new partnership throughout 2017 and 2018. Visit the Malala Fund website to learn more about its honorable mission and to contribute to the cause.
