When you’re traveling internationally without an international mobile plan, WiFi can mean the difference between connectivity with the world and an extreme lack thereof. WifiMapper helps you find free WiFi anywhere in the world, claiming it’s the world’s largest WiFi database. The app helps you find more than 2 million hotspots and 500 million WiFi networks worldwide.

Open the app and it’ll show you a map of nearby WiFi providers and hotspots. Gray hotspots on the map require a password, while green hotspots on the map do not. Walk within range and then connect. The app even tells you if the connection is free, how it performs, if it has a time limit and whether or not it’s secure. You can also choose what type of venue you’d prefer to visit when using an open connection, whether that’s a café, bar, library or etc. Users additionally leave comments regarding the connection, both through the app itself and Foursquare.

The one downside? The app only works when you’re already connected to WiFi, meaning you’ll need to search out hotspots to use during the day, before you leave the WiFi at your home or hotel.

The free app is currently available for both Apple and Android devices. There are several apps available with similar names, so be sure to download the app developed by Open Signal. You may know Open Signal from their other app, which is used to measure your wireless connection’s performance and quality. In fact, all of the data that makes WifiMapper work as well as it does is compiled from user information generated by the original Open Signal app.
