Some travelers are satisfied with traveling without the pesky ping of their mobile notifications. Other travelers may not be so keen to set off on an excursion in a foreign land without access to their mail, social media, weather apps, etc. Luckily, an app is readily available in the travel market that allows travelers to find WiFi hot spots in more than 140 countries.
SpeedSpot Wi-Fi Finder, available for iPhone and iPad, uses GPS technology to pair your current location with nearby businesses that offer free WiFi. Internet connection is not required to use the app, thus making it easy to locate the closest connection even without a signal.
The app delivers its results in a map view of locations that provide WiFi connections. Users can filter the venues by category like hotel, restaurant, café or shop. Icons display the locations as either green, yellow or red based on the internet’s speed in a specific location. Click on the pins to view more information including the address, hours of operation and phone number of the business.
Similar to most WiFi-finding apps, SpeedSpot Wi-Fi Finder still has a few kinks to work out, but for travelers looking for basic functionality and accurate information, the free app is one of the best available.
