First organized in 1949, The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival bills itself as “the longest-running festival of its kind,” dedicated to the written word and contemporary culture. The event is known for bringing the brightest minds in fiction, journalism, theater and academia, making it one of the most prestigious events to be invited to.
Held for 10 days, the Cheltenham Literature Festival features a number of panels, workshops and debates, usually centered on a theme like 2014’s Brave New World, which questioned where democracy was going in today’s political and technological climate. This year will examine two themes: America Uncovered which focuses on the country’s cultural influence on the rest of the world, and Millennial Lives which looks into issues most affecting Generation Y.
This year’s guests include a number of famous names across a range of mediums. Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, will be coming to discuss her memoir and movie adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon. Oliver Stone is participating in a discussion on filmmaking, his first time at the festival. Other guests include writer John Freeman, film and television star Alan Cumming and performer/academic Akala.
