Chimpanzee Safari in Tanzania

Chimpanzee trekking has become something of a national pastime in Tanzania and many locals offer adventures for tourists. One of the best spots to view these creatures in their natural habitat is in the Mahale Mountains.

Here you’ll find multiple trekking outfitters willing to guide you through the various forests, trails and waterfalls in hopes of catching a glimpse of our nearest cousins in the animal kingdom. Actually, you’re more likely to catch a face full of chimp hair than just a glimpse. These guys are generally not shy and happily amble up to humans who wander through the mountainside.

They’re mostly friendly, though as with any wild animal, getting too close is not recommended. The guides know exactly where to take you to witness the chimps engaging in play with others of their kind. On some tours, you might even be able to hang out with them for a bit and shake hands.
