China’s big cities have become notorious for air pollution, but the Chinese government is working to reverse that trend.
Chinese scientists constructed the world’s largest air purifier in Xi’an. The 100-meter-tall tower, surrounded by a series of greenhouses, collect polluted air and heat it. The air then rises into the tower, where filters scrub it of pollutants. The air is released back into the atmosphere from the top of the tower.
Though still in its testing phase, there’s already been an improvement in the air quality over about 10 square kilometers of the city. The tower pumps out about 10 million cubic meters of clean air daily. The project’s head research scientist says the tower lowers smog to moderate levels on heavily polluted days.
Xi’an is one of the four ancient capitals of China and home to the famous Terracotta Warriors. The city relies heavily on coal for heating in winter, which leads to pollution.

United Continues Its Global Expansion
