Biosphere Expeditions is all about combining amazing travel with projects targeted toward international wildlife conservation. With expedition opportunities all over the globe, everyone can find a way to visit their dream destination while also making a tangible difference. Due to the work Biosphere Expeditions has completed since the organization’s creation, they’ve been able to accomplish a multitude of positive changes, including creating protected areas for vital species, preventing wildlife destruction and creating wildlife management programs that are still in play in countries around the world today.
Currently, Biosphere Expeditions has 12 available trips in a variety of locations, including Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Portugal, Costa Rica, Slovakia, South Africa and more. The current expeditions have trip dates until late 2016, with new expedition opportunities added as they become available.
So, what can you expect on an expedition? There really aren’t any specific requirements. You don’t need to know anything about conservation, biology or science — just show up with a willingness to learn and work. For example, one available expedition is to Kyrgyzstan to work with snow leopard conservation in the Tien Shan Mountains. Travelers stay in yurts and spend most of their days tracking and identifying animals in the region for research opportunities, as well as working with anti-poaching education outreach in the local communities. Another expedition taking place in Costa Rica is aimed at monitoring Leatherback turtle movement overnight and travelers work in shifts to patrol the local beaches, or at the turtle hatchery, where they take the measurements of hatching turtles before releasing them back into the ocean.
If you’re not sure you’d like to go on a full trip yet, Biosphere Expeditions also offers experience days in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to introduce interested travelers to the program and work.
