Oases to kasbahs, souks to deserts, Morocco offers a wide range of terrain for two-wheeled explorers of both the off-road and tarmac persuasion.
For those that like to get off the beaten path, mountain bike trails snake the Atlas Mountains. The Tichka Pass is the highest at 2,260 meters, making it the highest major mountain pass in North Africa, and the Sahara desert offers a unique and memorable terrain for even the most experienced off-roaders.
Improvements in road surfaces in recent years make the country an exciting prospect for road cyclists too, particularly those looking to explore further afield than the more conventional cycling routes of southern Europe. Traveling from town to town in Morocco gives a sense of time travel as medieval settlements and souks slowly give way to bustling modern cities.
Testament to the progress being made in Morocco is the Marrakech Atlas Etape. The race was inaugurated in 2013, making it one of the newest charity sportives in the world, and it attracts serious amateurs as well as professional riders. The event is held in aid of a Moroccan NGO called Education for All and there are three different routes to cater to all abilities. The routes cover 140 kilometers, 104 kilometers and 60 kilometers, respectively.
Whether you are a casual cyclist wanting to explore the country and experience the warm Moroccan hospitality or a more serious competitor wanting to test yourself in unique conditions, Morocco has lots to offer to the cycling community.
