Nothing ruins vacation fun faster than a case of the runs. For anyone who has experienced this unpleasant malady, you know Traveler’s Diarrhea is no laughing matter. The best way to avoid the situation is to follow these preventative tips.
Traveler’s Diarrhea is most common in so-called “developing nations” or areas that follow different sanitation practices than at home. Be prepared by packing over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medicine, such as Pepto-Bismol, and rehydration drink mixes, such as powdered Gatorade, in your suitcase. While these items may seem trivial, the last thing you want to do is search for a pharmacy after you’re stricken with diarrhea.
Avoid eating uncooked or cold foods as these can harbor more bacteria than hot, cooked meals. If you must eat fresh fruit, be sure to thoroughly wash it and peel it beforehand.
Make a point to drink sealed, bottled water and forgo ice in your drinks. While most resort areas are aware of traveler’s sensitive stomachs, there is no way to guarantee that ice was made with bottled water. It’s best to play it safe.
When all else fails and Traveler’s Diarrhea strikes, be sure to stay properly hydrated and do not be shy about seeking medical attention if your bout is unusually severe or lasts more than 48 hours.
