One of the biggest hurdles to traveling abroad, it seems, is the language barrier travelers face. The prospect of traveling to a country or city where you do not know the language can be a daunting one.
Duolingo is a free mobile app that helps people learn a new language. The app is broken into options for learnable languages based on which languages the learner is already fluent in. English speakers, for instance, have the opportunity to learn Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Hungarian and more.
Users select a language and then are presented with lessons in a linear style. Questions are presented and learners must answer with only a few mistakes in order to pass the lesson. Proficiency in lessons opens up more complex lessons as the learner gets a grasp on the language.
Perhaps Duolingo’s biggest asset is the app’s presentation as a game. Learners use the app every day to keep their “streak” alive and earn points; players can unlock new costumes for the Duolingo mascot, Duo; and learners can join groups of learners in the game to compete for streaks and other things. Learners can join clubs to practice the language with others.
Duolingo is available on iOS, Android and Windows phones. If users wish, they can purchase a subscription to Duolingo Premium, which removes unobtrusive ads from the experience.
