Headed to Mississippi this spring? Add some of these outdoor adventures to your itinerary.
Hike to the more than 50 waterfalls you can find spread out over Clark Creek Natural Area in Woodville. They range from 10 to 30 feet tall, and the natural area stretches over a vast 700 acres.
For another unique hiking experience, head to Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area and take to Tanglefoot Trail, or at least part of it, anyway. The trail is more than 40 miles long and follows a historic railroad corridor. If you were to bike the entire thing, you’d pass through six communities and an array of ecosystems, from wetlands to meadows to forests.
If you prefer to see the great outdoors from a boat, large or small, you have several options this spring. Take to the Mississippi River on a canoe with Quapaw Canoe Company for an expert, guide-led excursion. Combine a boat ride (with no paddling on your end) with some island explorations when you take the ferry to Ship Island, a barrier island off the Gulf Coast. The ferry ride is about an hour, so you get plenty of time to take in the water views, and once you’re on the island, you’ll enjoy a mix of natural attractions and history. The island is home to an 1800s military fort.
